How I do my computing
Computers
I’m using 2 computers at the moment:
- As my desktop and main computer, I use a Dell Optiplex SFF 790, mainly because it is small and serviceable.
- As my laptop, I use a ThinkPad X200. It is a very lightweight computer, with a nice keyboard and good Linux support. Although a bit old, it is still performing great with nowadays GNU/Linux distributions.
In general, I prefer buying second hand hardware, as it is cheaper, more ecological, and let us have a better perspective on the durability of the machines.
Smartphones
The least I can say is that I’m not really a fan of smartphones, for various reasons, so I try to minimize my reliance on those devices, and only carry one with me when I need it.
- I have a Pixel 3a with GrapheneOS, a security focused OS made by Daniel Micay.
- I’m still using my previous one (Galaxy Nexus from 2011) only for LINE. Although it is 100% functional, I had to change as the 3G networks are being phased out in Japan.
Operating System
I like unix-like operating systems, I ran various GNU/Linux distributions in the past, and also used Mac OS X for years.
- On my personal computers, I’m using Fedora, mainly because I can use a kickstart file to re-install my OS with everything I need and be up and running in less than an hour.
- On my work computer, I’m still using Kubuntu, but will move to Fedora soon.
- For my servers, I prefer running Debian
